Last week I posted about how I remodeled my garage and converted it into a great, modern guest house that I am now renting out on Airbnb to bring in an extra source of income.
Turning your unused real estate into a source of income is a huge trend right now. I’ve spoken to so many people that are having great success with it and are so happy that they decided to give it a try.
Homeowners are building spaces above their garages or converting their garages into apartments for guests, relatives and renters. Some people are using these new additions as a place to house aging parents or boomerang adult kids when rising housing prices and rents make it tough to find other arrangements. The idea to rent out a part of your home in order to bring in some extra income is also becoming super popular.
It all started when a friend gave me two boxes of beautiful art books after her architect brother passed away, because she knew that I love and collect art books and would appreciate them. I was thrilled to get them, but didn’t have the shelf space for them, so they sat in the boxes for a few months.
If there is anything that I love more than fabric, it’s yarn. The colors and textures were so gorgeous and inspirational. It made me want to weave again, which I haven’t done in a very long time.
I want to talk about creating some new architectural details in a space for extra design value. Think about adding woodwork and trim to your walls, doors and even your ceiling to add drama and pump up the details in your space. You can add molding around your doors and windows, medallions on the ceiling, wainscoting at the base, and panels and picture frames along the wall.
This week’s Decor Revolution design tip is to frame your children’s artwork. We all hang our children’s artwork on the refrigerator door, or tack it up somewhere temporarily, when they make something at school or at home when they are playing with paint or crayons. I’m talking about making it a permanent part of your décor. Feature it on the walls of your home like gallery artwork.
I’ve been searching for some extra seating for a Decor Revolution client’s living room and we decided that we might add a couple of ottomans under the console, in her entry, that she could then pull into the living room when she needed extra seating. That’s when I came across these ottomans that I love.
It’s August, and the subject of my Décor Revolution Design 411 blog for this month is going to be about window treatments. Window treatments not only transform the look of a room, but they can also save energy, make your space more comfortable and make your home healthier.
Do you love to entertain? I know that I don’t do it as much as I’d like to, but when I do, my favorite part is designing the table. Setting a great table when you entertain is no longer about pulling out your grandmother’s china, silver and linen tablecloths.
Are you’re beautiful display pieces getting lost on black or dark wood-stained bookshelves or hutches? You can help to show off your collectibles and even brighten up the entire room by painting the back of your shelves with a bright color. Or if you have a white built-in or free-standing bookcase, give the back of the shelves a pop of color and liven up your space.
