Custom Furniture - How We Guide Our Clients Through the Process

The project can be fabricated based on my design by my upholsterer, cabinet maker, ironworker or other artisans and craftspeople that I’ve worked with.

The cover image, for example, is of a custom sofa that my upholsterer fabricated based on my design. He built the frame, the support system and padding, He used the fabric that I custom ordered for it, and I specified the dimensions, arm and leg style, and type of cushion.

He made this custom chair and ottoman for the same client to coordinate with it that I also designed for her.

We guide our clients through the process by creating a drawing with measurements based on their space, as well as talking them through a sit test to see what is comfortable for them in terms of seat depth and height, arm height, and back height. We cover all the details and source fabrics that we think will be perfect for their design.

This is another custom sofa that my upholsterer fabricated. The client wanted a tight back with lots of loose back pillows. We sourced the sofa fabric and all the pillow fabrics and coordinated them all to work together with the cord trims.

Custom furniture can also be sourced wholesale through my trusted trade vendors. While the overall style of the piece is often predetermined, there are typically options to customize wood or metal finishes and fabric selections. For this project, to coordinate with the above sofa, I sourced two chairs and two ottomans from Lee Furniture, using the customer’s own material that I carefully selected, along with the wood finish. The versatile ottomans can transition seamlessly between different spaces—serving as footrests for the chairs or doubling as a coffee table in front of the sofa with the addition of a tray.

Decor Revolution custom designed this dining table, chairs and bench to work next to the new kitchen for our clients. They are by Canadel and we were able to customize the wood finish for the blue tabletop and ivory apron and legs, as well as the upholstery for the bench and chairs.

My clients for this custom family room sofa, wanted very specific dimensions, because the man of the house and his son are quite tall. They wanted a sofa that was extra deep. We selected this striped fabric for them and this modern track arm style and had it fabricated from scratch to all our specifications.

Sometimes having a piece of furniture custom made can be even quicker than ordering retail when items can be backordered and often take months to ship.

This customization project is one of my favorites! The client purchased the four new chairs that were very generic, and we collaborated to transform her existing dining set. Our refinisher beautifully stained the tabletop and painted the chairs, as well as the legs and apron of the dining table, to create a cohesive look. Then, we worked with my upholsterer to reupholster the chairs in vibrant, playful fabrics we carefully selected together. The result is a stunning and refreshed dining set with a unique personality!

We designed this nightstand base and had our artisanal ironworker create two of them to coordinate with the to-the-trade campaign iron bed for a primary bedroom. We put a ¼” sheet of glass on the lower shelf so there could be extra storage below. The teak wood cabinets that rest inside the base came from the old headboard on a Danish modern platform bed from the 80’s.

For a project in Pasadena a few years ago, we designed a custom Craftsman settle featuring rich java leather paired with a burnt umber wood finish. We complemented it with a custom Craftsman recliner upholstered in Robert Allen's Blitz/Mango fabric (now discontinued) and matched the wood finish for a cohesive look. To enhance the sofa, we added custom pillows crafted from a classic Craftsman fabric with a contrasting welt for added detail. These personalized touches made the space truly one-of-a-kind for our client.

We ordered two of these Hooker chairs for the remodel project we completed a couple of months ago. We were able to customize them with the wood finish, the fabric selection and the sling back fabric selection. We chose a very subtle, pretty, high performance fabric for the chairs.

Over the years, I’ve designed countless custom furniture pieces that make our clients' spaces truly unique—something retail just can’t match. At Décor Revolution, we can collaborate with talented artisans and craftspeople to create bespoke pieces. Let’s help bring your next project to life!
